former_d1, Better Pull The Trigger On The Sports Package

Reply from PTJR, 12-03-2008, 15:14:

» Monday's game will be on DirecTV channel 617 according to Fox College
» Sports

As we discussed at lunch, with a simple phone call you can get it turned on immediately, and at the end of the season turned off in the same simple manner. It only costs about $10-$12 per month, so you will only spend $30-$36 for the entire season to get a lot of games you can't get otherwise (obviously including at least a couple of UALR's games, and a bunch of WKU games, Atlantic-10 games, and a whole lot more). Well worth it!
Problem is we are part of the University of Arkansas System, just like UCLA is part of the University of California system. Obviously not true for private schools like Tulsa and Providence (I think they are private), or the State schools you mentioned which are not part of the same State system as their flagship campus- ex. I don't think Auburn has ever been the University of Alabama at Auburn. Don't know if we could break away from the University of Arkansas system. Obviously there must be some advantages to being part of the system- I really don't know what the pros and cons are and thus whether breaking way makes any sense or not.

Sun Belt bowl situation is about to get nasty

Reply from former_d1, 12-03-2008, 13:56:

» Seems like the I-Bowl is being pressured by LaTech folks not to select a
» Sun Belt team as their opponent in the upcoming bowl game. Problem is the
» I-Bowl, Papa John's Bowl, and St. Pete Bowl all signed contracts with the
» Belt stating that a bowl eligible Belt team would fill one of their slots
» if the contracted conference didn't have enough bowl eligible teams. Now
» the bowls are arguing the contract doesn't prevent them from passing over a
» 6-6 Sun Belt team for another 6-6 team (There seems to be no doubt they
» could take a 7-5 team over a 6-6 Sun Belt team, but none are likely to be
» available). The bowl oversight committee, headed by none other than Wright
» Waters, has reportedly handed down a ruling in favor of the Sun Belt and
» the contracts they signed with the bowls. If the bowls pass over the Sun
» Belt, there's probably not much that can be done at the moment, but I'm
» sure a lawsuit would be inevitable. Of course, this wouldn't make the Sun
» Belt a lot of friends at the bowls they may end up sueing. Anyway, this
» could get real interesting.

The (Shreveport) Times "has learned" that Louisiana Tech "has been asked to participate" and has "accepted" to play in the Independence Bowl.

The 2 a.m. on-line post by Jimmy Watson says that while there can be no official comments by either the Bowl or Tech, "Tech fans can now officially begin purchasing their tickets for the Dec. 28" Bowl.

The article says this is "the smart choice to help fill Independence Stadium" for the ESPN-televised contest.

Jimmy said that Tech's opponent is "expected to come from a pool of 6-6 teams including North Carolina State, Southern Miss, Memphis and Notre Dame."

Read "Tech to play in Independence Bowl" at http://www.shreveporttimes.com/article/20081203/SPORTS02/81202046/1026/SPORTS02

We complain about the way the Demozette covers us,

Post by Dr. J., 12-03-2008, 13:50:

but has anyone ever sat down and composed a nice personal letter to Mr. Hussman, explaining the situation, and asking that he check into it? I don't mean a critical letter, but one that would make sense to a reasonable person. I'm thinking about doing it, with a copy to Chris and Wally Hall. Assuming I do it, I will post a copy of the letter here. Probably won't make a difference, but it can't hurt anything.

Where's Slatton?

Reply from Dr. J., 12-03-2008, 12:54:

» » sarcasm intended.

He made the trip, but no story this morning. There's nearly always one the day after our games. That way, the powers that be can say they cover the Trojans, while being sure not too many people know about the game beforehand so that they might attend. They think they are fooling the Trojans fans, but most of us are not that stupid. For years I couldn't believe there was any kind of conspiracy against us, but when this team is 5-0 against known mid major opponents, with III high in many categories within the conference, and even in the nation, playing a very good Mo Valley team tonight, something is very surely rotten in Denmark. Until our most powerful boosters who have pull with Mr. Hussman go to him and demand proper coverage, things will remain the same, sorry to say. If that doesn't work, we'll just have to wait until there's another newspaper. And sad to say, the local TV channels are just as bad. How about one of them having the guts to step up and call their sports news "Trojan Territory". I appreciate the Razorbacks, but when the local station calls their sports news "Razorback Nation" it's a slap in the face to Trojan fans. What a travesty.

Mo State preview

Post by MICHAELSPAPPY, 12-03-2008, 12:07:

Sagarin has them by 5. CBS has them by 2.

Starting front line will likely be 6-8, 6-6, 6-4. Fowler will likely be on Chris Cooks, their leading scorer, who is just about John's build and size.

Their defense is not good. Opponents shoot better than 48% overall and 39% from the arc. They get outrebounded by over 5 per game. Spencer Laurie is their big 3-point threat at 45%.

They shoot only 40% overall, and 35% from the arc.

Actually, in a lot of ways they mirror us, except they are 2-2 and we are 5-0. Of course, they have the big win over Fayetteville to their account.

Springfield paper

Post by former_d1, 12-03-2008, 12:07:

But Missouri State forward Kyle Weems said the Trojans have the Bears' full attention entering tonight's game at JQH Arena.

"They're a solid team on film and they get after it," Weems said. "They're good at what they do.

"And they're undefeated. That says something."

UALR is 5-0, including a two-point home-court victory over one of the Bears' chief conference rivals, Creighton.

MSU coach Cuonzo Martin said this could be a bigger challenge than the more-acclaimed Razorbacks that the Bears defeated opening night at JQH.

"They're very talented," Martin said of UALR. "They have four or five experienced guys back who played a lot of minutes for them last year."

Mom will be Extra Merry this Holiday with a $10,000 Scholarship
How to Keep Your PC Clean and Quick
The Secret to Getting Highly Discounted Cruise Tickets
Last year was a good one for the Trojans. They went 20-11 and, with five starters back, are co-favorites to win the Sun Belt Conference West Division.

Coach Steve Shields said he isn't bothered by playing in the shadows of the Razorbacks.

"That's something out of our control," Shields said. "We try to control what we can do on the floor and control that mind-set that we bring every day."

Even though his team is 5-0, Shields is far from pleased. He called Saturday's eight-point home-court victory over Loyola Marymount a disappointment.

"I like our guys' togetherness, but I worry about our consistency," Shields said.

"We got kicked on the glass by Loyola-Marymount. They outrebounded us by nine and shot 57 percent from the floor. They were very comfortable offensively.

"That goes back to consistency. We weren't very good at all."

The Trojans were good on Nov. 25 in their victory over Creighton, the Missouri Valley Conference preseason favorite. Mike Smith's late tip-in won it 71-69.

Shields is determined not to let his team slip following that victory.

"If we can build on it, maybe we'll look back in time and feel like it was a good, quality win that propelled us to better things," Shields said.

"If we get fat and full of ourselves ... it won't mean much at all."

UALR's youngest starter, sophomore guard Matt Mouzy, is its leading scorer at 16.6 per game. Three others average between 10 and 12 points.

Smith, a 6-foot-7, 295-pounder, is the team's leading rebounder at 6.8 per game.

He's a reason the Trojans are a plus-5 in rebound margin. The Bears, meanwhile, are a minus-5.7.

"They're not a very big or physical team, but they're quick, athletic and have good length," Martin said.

"We've done a lot of rebounding drills. We just have to continue to box out and chase rebounds. Our guards have to get in there and help the big guys."

Never Commented On La Tech Football

Reply from PTJR, 12-03-2008, 11:57:

» "Both appear to have something in common- neither one can compete against
» quality competition in football. But for incredible luck, the Chickenhawgs
» would be winless this season, and tonight the Bulldogs of La Tech go down
» 38-3 to a good Boise State team. More hard times down in Ruston."
»
» Peter early this year on Tech Football :-D
»
» Let me throw in that the BB would be doing a lot better if the pg's were
» still there. We all saw that they have the size and the wings to compete
» but just like us when we had to move Zack Wright to pg, it is hard to play
» with true pg's.
»
» Back to the topic, the three bowls made deals that thought they would
» never have to keep for the chance that a "Boise State/Hawaii" could happen
» in the SBC. Now, that is crazy.
»
» Do you really want to play in a game the town and the bowl does not want
» you?

At the time I made that comment about La Tech, I was more referring to the Chickenhawgs than the Bulldogs. But in reviewing La Tech's schedule I can see where that came from because at the time the Chickenhawgs had won by the hair of their chinny chin chins over Western Illinois and La Monroe, and La Tech had victories over hapless Mississippi State and SE La.

What I don't understand is what you are talking about "playing a game in a town that does not want you?" What are you referring to? La Tech getting passed up several times by the Independence Bowl that my be stuck with them this year or what?

And it really is too bad for the Bulldogs about those guards. La Tech seemed to me to be big but not much else without them.
